cPanel is the next generation web hosting control panel system. Basically it allows you to adminstrate a server from the web using a simple GUI. When I got my dedicated server I decided to pay an extra $25 for cPanel figuring it would make everything easier. It has to a degree, but what really annoys me about it is no Apache 2 support! When was Apache 2 released? Oh yeah, that’s right… May of 2002!
You might ask why I don’t use Apache version 1. Well the problem with that is mod_proxy for Apache 2 is vasty improved, and I need mod_proxy to use mogrel for rails.
After a little help from google and the cpanel forums I found out that they are working on it, and I actually found the bugzilla bug for apache 2 support. The developer updates the bug quite often on the progress. It’s currently in the beta tree, so hopefully sometime this year(crosses fingers) it makes it’s way into stable. For now I am content with apache 1 and fastcgi, but that’s only because my site is not open to the public yet. Hopefully they get this all resolved soon.
Just use the beta tree then, it’s not like it matters if your website is ‘production-ready stable’
Apache 2.2.3 is avaliable with Cpanel 11.
You have to select manual or automatic updates, bleeding edge build in your update config.
Then it go to Apache Update after the Cpanel update has completed and you’ll be able to install Apache 2.0.0+
